“And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son” (1 John 5:11)
The Greek word for “life” in our opening verse is Zoë; it means the God-life, or the God-kind of life! This is the essence of divinity, the very life of God. The same meaning of the word “life” is also conveyed by Jesus in John 5:26: “For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself” and John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Thus, “everlasting life” or “eternal life” doesn’t refer to life that goes on endlessly; it means the life of God; the essence and quality of divinity! If you’re a Christian you have received this eternal life, and this means that your human life was supplanted with the life and nature of God the very minute your received Jesus as Lord and Saviour of your life. God wants you to take advantage of this life in you and bring out the best in you, living above the limitations of the world. Praise God!
